Program Overview
Employers across the US spend approximately $536 billion dollars on voluntary turnover annually and, as we shift to a ‘new normal’ in COVID-19, this landscape will continue to change. This begs the question: do employers really know what matters most to the diverse workforce of today?
To answer this question, LSHRM, along with a thoughtful group of community leaders, launched Better Workplaces, Better World (BW2): a city-wide research project aimed at driving innovative and effective retention programs.
With an overwhelmingly positive response to the survey, please join us on July 14th as we reveal the insights from this research and how it can drive innovative approaches to keeping your workforce. This time will be dedicated to:
- Remarks from city leadership on the importance of retention to Greater Louisville’s growth and economic competitiveness.
- Revealing data insights on the benefits, perks, etc. that matter most to Greater Louisville’s diverse workforce.
- In-depth discussion from business and community leaders locally on the significance of these data insights, their impact in a post-COVID world, and what innovation can look like in motion.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Michael Gritton has been the Executive Director of KentuckianaWorks since 2002. In that time, the Workforce Development Board has earned national praise and recognition for cutting-edge workforce efforts like the SummerWorks program, Code Louisville, and the Career Calculator. They've also worked in partnership with JCPS and GLI to improve our high schools through the Academies of Louisville effort and to recruit over 130 business partners to those schools. Gritton is a proud graduate of PRP High School, Duke University, and Columbia Law School.
Nathan Shanks works at Logal Lavelle Hunt as an Insurance Advisor concentrating on commercial property and casualty insurance. He is a graduate of the University of Louisville with a background in Management, Professional and Cyber Liability. Nathan was born and raised in Louisville, KY, where he resides with his wife, Sarah, and their pets, Gus and Mo.
He is the President-Elect of the Young Professionals Association of Louisville, focusing on connecting, engaging, and developing young professionals in our community. In addition, he serves on the membership and recruitment committee for the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville.
Pamela Williams is the Director of Diversity & Inclusion and a Board member with the Louisville Society for Human Resource Management (LSHRM). Currently, she is employed as the Director of Personnel Administration with Rudd Equipment Co. Prior to that she was the Director of Human Resources for Volunteers of America Mid-States and served as the Program Director for the Muhammad Ali Childhood Home Museum. On a part-time basis, she continues to assist her clients as the owner and founder of CorpEx, LLC – an HR management consulting firm, focusing on Organizational Development, HR Practices/Policies, Board Retreats, Strategic Planning, Business Coaching, and Performance Management. Her company was profiled in the 2017 Who’s Who Louisville African-American Profiles – Entrepreneur category.
Pamela relocated back home to Louisville in 2016, after living in the Washington, DC area for more than 28 years. Prior to leaving the East coast, Pamela served as the Executive Director of HR and Organizational Development with IMRG, Inc., a federal government outsourcing firm in Lanham, MD.
Pamela is a Focus Louisville graduate with Leadership Louisville, was recognized by Louisville Business First as a 2nd Act Award recipient in 2017 and is a former board member with Dress for Success Louisville, where she served on several committees. Pamela has also served as an Advisory Council member with the U of L College of Arts and Sciences. She holds an MS degree in Human Resource Management (University of Maryland, University College), a BS degree in Business Administration (Western Kentucky University), and holds her PHR certification.
Pamela is a published contributing author of two books: “Permission to Win” - (2016) and “My Now Student Leader” - (2014).
Pamela has a son who is a rising Junior attending Towson State University in Towson, MD.
Steve Cunanan is the Chief Executive Officer for the Kentucky Region of the American Red Cross. After completing graduate studies and military service Steve joined Owens Corning, a leading manufacturer of construction and building products. He held several Human Resources positions and also acted as business leader for a manufacturing department.
In 1998 Steve joined Johnson & Johnson, Ethicon Endo-Surgery in Cincinnati, Ohio as HR Director for the Corporate support organizations and Research and Development. He was then promoted to Vice President, Human Resources, J&J Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics-International and was based in London, England. Steve joined the J&J Consumer Companies in 2004 as Vice President, Human Resources, North America. In 2007 Steve assumed global Human Resources responsibilities for the Johnson & Johnson Consumer Group of Companies and was a member of the Consumer Group Operating Committee.
Steve was appointed Chief Human Resource Officer for Catalyst Health Solutions, a leading pharmacy benefit management organization, in 2011. From 2013 - 2018 Steve served as Chief Administrative and Chief People Officer for Kindred Healthcare, with overall responsibility for the company’s human capital initiatives.
Steve received a BA in Psychology from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina and also received his MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from that same institution. He serves as a Board member for the East Carolina University Foundation, USA Cares, and Greater Louisville, Inc. (GLI). In addition, he is co-chair of the GLI Talent Steering Team.
Steve, his wife Ellen, and their two children live in Louisville.
Tiffany Cardwell, a Principal Consultant with MCM’s HR Solutions Group, has more than twenty years of experience in domestic and international HR. She has expertise in mergers & acquisitions, compensation, engagement, talent management, total rewards and workforce planning. Tiffany has worked for several top employers including Trans Union in Chicago, Humana, Papa John’s and Signature HealthCare. Tiffany recently won the coveted Lyle Hanna HR Spirit Award for the state of Kentucky and has been recognized as a Business First 40 Under 40 and 20 People To Know in HR. Tiffany serves on several Boards/Committees including Actor’s Theater, Brightside, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, GLI’s City Champs & Talent Attraction initiatives, the Kentucky Chamber’s Talent Pipeline Management Initiative & Opioid Taskforce, the Kentucky Health Collaborative, Northwestern University’s Ambassador Program, the American Lung Association’s Regional Board Chair and the Worksite Wellness Council of Louisville. Tiffany currently serves as the KYSHRM Foundation & Philanthropy Director, LSHRM (Louisville Society for Human Resource Management) Wellness Director & had previously served as the 2014 LSHRM Past President. Tiffany graduated with a BA from Northwestern University and an MSIR from Loyola University in Chicago and has her CCP, SHRM-CP, PHR, CTA and Integrated Six Sigma Yellow Belt certifications.
Dr. Sharon Kerrick is Chair/Faculty at U of L’s College of Education & Human Development. Dr. Kerrick was previously the Dean of Bellarmine University’s AACSB accredited School of Business (2016-2019). Prior to that she was the Associate Director of the Forcht Entrepreneurship Center at the University of Louisville’s College of Business (2002-2016) teaching in the MBA, coaching business plan teams and founder of the Entrepreneurship Minor.
She created the community program “VetStart” that helps military veterans start businesses and since 2012 over 100 military veterans have gone through the program. In 2015, she was named Small Business Administration (SBA) military Veteran Business Advocate of the Year.
Before her academic career, she was one of the founding members of a technology firm for 20 years that grew to employ over 300 full time staff in a 5 state region and provided technology training for between 11-13,000 students each year.
A past 40 Under 40 Business First recipient she was also named to Business First’s 2017 Hall of Fame. Also in 2017, she was recipient of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Kentucky Hall of Fame award and in 2018 the NAWBO EPIC award.
Today’s Woman magazine named her 2018 “Most Admired Woman in Education” and Business First named her 2019 “Mentor of the Year”.
She is the vice chair for the Louisville Water Company Board of Directors, secretary for the NAWBO Foundation Board of Directors, member of the Junior Achievement Board of Directors and a Deacon at her church as well as secretary to the chair endowment Board.
Dr. Kerrick is an accredited angel investor who has been quoted in Forbes and has rang the bell at NASDAQ stock exchange twice!
Trasee Whitaker joined Masonic Homes Kentucky in 2010 and is the Chief Human Resource Officer. Masonic Homes Kentucky is certified as a Great Place to Work and a 2018 Fortune magazine Great Place to Work in Aging Services. She is recognized as a leader in developing and implementing successful employer of choice initiatives and recruiting strategies. Masonic is a Job Descriptions Exchange (JDX) Pilot Partner with the US Chamber and has recently been approved as a healthcare apprenticeship worksite in Kentucky. Trasee’s extensive business experience includes healthcare, legal services, nonprofit service organization, and retail management.
Trasee currently serves as a regional representative on the Advocacy Committee for the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration (ASHHRA), is a leader on the Jefferson Public County Schools Academies of Louisville Guiding Team, and a board member of the Healthcare Careers Collaborative of Greater Louisville.
She previously served as Chair of the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KY SHRM) and President of the Louisville Society for Human Resource Management (LSHRM). She is the Lyle Hanna Volunteer Spirit Award recipient for 2017 and was recognized by Business First as one of the top 20 People to Know in Human Resources. She is a contributing author in Evolution of Human Resources; chapter Innovation-Inspired Human Resources.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from The Ohio State Universityin 1983 and currently holds the designations of Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).
