March Chapter Meeting - Workplace Preparedness (5 recert credits for full program)

When: Tuesday, March 12th, 2024

Session #1 - 9:00 am to 11:00 am (2 recert credits)

Session #2 - 11:30 am to 1:30 pm (1 recert credit)

Session #3 - 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm (2 recert credits)

Program Details

Three sessions will be held on March 12th; each session is approved for those who need to earn credit hours.

Session #1: BUILDING A WINNING MINDSET

This two-hour session will include classroom-style instruction for de-escalation and Active Aggressor Awareness and Survival Tactics

De-escalation Class:

· Understanding Why Someone is in Crisis

· De-escalation Definition and Statistics

· Philosophy/Approach

· Behavioral Change Awareness

· Tabletop Examples

· Active Listening Skills

Active Aggressor Class:

  • History of Previous Events
  • Educate on Warning Signs
  • Recommend Personal Safety Strategies
  • Cover Three Pillars of Survival

Session #2: CREATING STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING AND RESPONDING TO ACTIVE AGGRESSOR THREATS OR WORKPLACE VIOLENCE ENVIRONMENTS

This panel session will be an open Q&A session. Participants include current and retired members of LMPD, HR professionals, and an Old National City Bank survivor.

With increases in workplace shootings and violence around the world, organizations must think about and prepare for when conflict escalates to a level that puts worker safety at risk. This session will discuss the indicators and motivators of workplace violence and strategies for creating a safe and more positive workplace.

Session #3: EMERGENCY ACTION PLANS IN REAL TIME

This two-hour session is geared towards HR employees in management positions. STAT Co-founders will take the class participants through a variety of scenario exercises to illustrate the importance of having a strong Emergency Plan that is communicated to the company so that during the event of an emergency, employees know what to do. The topics listed below are examples of what will be covered:

· Contingency operational planning for your organization

· Implementing your Emergency Action Plans (EAPs)

· Managing an active aggressor event in real time utilizing a checklist

· Collaborating with first responders on the scene

· Surviving and winning the aftermath

Eric Culver, Owner/Chief Instructor of STAT

Eric Culver is an Owner / Chief Instructor of STAT. He has been a police officer for over 21 years and is retired from the Louisville Metro Police Department SWAT team. He has served in various law enforcement roles, including Patrol Officer, Detective, and Sergeant while serving in numerous tactical team member/leader positions. Additionally, Eric was a Special Agent with the F.B.I. Eric has helped to implement the Active Shooter response for his department in conjunction with the other first responders. He has presented on local, state, and national levels regarding tactical incidents to which he has personally responded. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, with a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown College, a master’s from the University of the Cumberlands, and numerous law enforcement-related certifications.

Dale Massey, Owner/Chief Instructor of STAT

Dale Massey is an Owner / Chief Instructor of STAT. Dale is a retired police officer from the Louisville Metro Police Department with over 22 years of service. His last position before retirement was as the SWAT Team Commander and the active shooter coordinator. He has served in various law enforcement roles, including Patrol Officer, HALO Officer, FLEX Detective, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. Dale has helped to implement the Active Shooter response for his department in conjunction with the other first responders. He has presented on local, state, and national levels regarding tactical incidents to which he has personally responded. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Dale has attended the University of Louisville, Bellarmine University, and the Community College of the Air Force. He was the Valedictorian of the Southern Police Institute Executive Officer’s Course.

Darrin McCauley, SVP - Corporate Lending, Old National Bank - Louisville, KY

Darrin McCauley is the corporate business development officer of Old National Bank’s Kentucky market. He is tasked with developing opportunities for the bank through strong, strategic advisor relationships with companies and their senior management teams throughout the Kentucky region and Southern Indiana. For over thirty years, he has been in the corporate lending and financial services. Darrin is the Chairman of Old National’s Retirement Committee, an Executive Committee member of the Association for Corporate Growth – Kentucky and is a board member of the Louisville Arena Authority as well as a member of their finance and procurement committees. In 2021, Governor Beshear appointed Darrin to the Kentucky Schools Facilities Construction Commission, an independent agency providing equitable distribution of state funding for school construction and technology.

William Pearson, retired LMPD SWAT Team Member

William Pearson III is a retired police officer from the Louisville Metro Police Department with over 23 years of service. Billy served 20 years on the Louisville Metro Police SWAT team, worked in a uniformed patrol capacity as well as conducting narcotics investigations and in an undercover asset role for several federal agencies. Billy responded to the Old National Bank shooting as a SWAT team member. He helped to evacuate two employees who were shot and wounded on that day. He helped to lead several employees from the upper floor offices as he cleared the building with other SWAT team members and police officers. He is the father of two sons. 

Matt Sanders, Commander of LMPD Media and Public Relations Office

Sgt Matt Sanders is currently the Commander of the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Media and Public Relations Office. He’s been with LMPD for 14 years, spending 10 of those years on the SWAT team. Sgt Sanders responded to Old National Bank in a crisis communications role and was responsible for disseminating critical information to the media and public. Sgt Sanders facilitated media staging locations, coordinated reunification efforts, and prepared national media press conferences. He is married with two children.

R. Brayton Bowen, AM, SHRM-SCP, LSHRM Director of Professional Development

R. Brayton Bowen, AM, SHRM-SCP, consultant, speaker, author, and educator, is the author of numerous works, including Recognizing and Rewarding Employees (McGraw-Hill). He leads The Howland Group®, a strategy consulting and change management firm. As Compassion Advocate and CEO for Building Better Worlds of Work, LLC, he manages a consultancy committed to developing leaders and organizations for the new millennium. His most recent work is available on Amazon – Engaging the Heart for People, Performance, and Profit: Seven Competencies of Compassion@Work (BBWW Press). He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brown University. His advice and opinions have been featured in nationally recognized publications, and he has spoken before prominent trade associations and professional organizations. Brayton co-produced and hosted the five-part documentary series Anger in the Workplace, distributed to national public media. He was featured with professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter of the Harvard Business School in an executive videotape series, Management Speaks. He is also a contributing author to Back to a New Normal: In Search of Stability in an Era of Pandemic Disruption (IAP, Inc.) and has been invited to teach at Indiana University Southeast, McKendree University, and Northwood University.

Alysa D. Lambert, Ph.D., SPHR, SHRM-SCP

Alysa D. Lambert, Ph.D., SPHR, SHRM-SCP, is a Professor of Human Resource Management in the School of Business at Indiana University Southeast, New Albany, IN. She received her Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Albany in Organizational Studies, specializing in Human Resource Management. Her major research and teaching interests focus on human resources, specifically in work-life balance issues and improving classroom pedagogy. She has published work in the Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Managerial Issues, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Human Resource Management, Journal of Human Resource Education and Applied Psychology in Criminal Justice. She is an active member of the community serving on nonprofit boards and supporting local HR professionals.
